Smoke,
Loved the pages. Now, I just recently read a description of the land
measurement system used by the original French plantationers. It apparently
was adapted to the bayou environment and involved linear measurement along
the natural bayou bank with a specific number of arpents' length back from
the bayou edge and the measurement was then given in something that could be
converted to acres. Does anybody have a site (or literature) that explains
this in a less casual way? This description came from one of Barbara
Hambly's Benjamin January series of 19th century mysteries.
