ClassiCat is the best software I have found.  Requires some typing, but
very powerful, kept up-to-date, and has libraries of information that
help you with your own Catalog.  It is designed and sold by a member of
this list...  It is based on Microsoft Access, as far as I know, and has
been around since 1994 or maybe way before that.
