If a consumer or colleague has a concern about physician competence-
The complaint can be raised with the:
1. State medical board -- that grants licenses to practice.
2. Health Insurance Plan/Independent Physician Association/Health Maintenance
Organization.
3. Some states also have state "offices of managed care" that also handle
consumer complaints.
Keep in mind that only a minority of physicians in the US belong to the
American Medical Association (or the state or county medical
associations/society). Not every physician is a member of their respective
specialty organization (such as the American Academy of Pediatrics), not
every physician seeing patients is board certified (often times part of the
requirement to belong to a specialty organization).
