CALL FOR PAPERS:

Middle Ground: Class, Family, and the Construction of Suburban Space in Nineteenth Century America

6th Annual Graduate Student Conference
Sponsored by:
The Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities
and
Boston University's American & New England Studies Program

February 6 & 7, 2003
Boston, Massachusetts

In nineteenth-century America, an explosion of urban populations forced the development of new residential patterns now called the suburbs.. The phenomenon of the suburb emerged from this cultural crucible as a
"middle ground" between the city and the country and social entity of its own right.

This interdisciplinary conference will explore the suburb as both a trope and a setting for the social and cultural construction of class, family, home, ethnicity, and neighborhood. We welcome proposals for 20 minute
scholarly papers from graduate students, public historians, and museum professionals in all fields, including, but not limited to: history,
literature, material culture, women's studies, art history, vernacular architecture, historic preservation, decorative arts, cultural geography, archaeology, anthropology, film and mass media, popular culture,
economics, political science, and sociology. Respondents will include prominent local scholars and museum professionals.

Please send a 500-word abstract along with a C.V. (including name, telephone number, e-mail address, mailing address, and academic or professional affiliation) to:
