In nineteenth-century America, an explosion of urban populations forced the development of new residential patterns now called the suburbs.. The phenomenon of the suburb emerged from this cultural crucible as a
"middle ground" between the city and the country and social entity of its own right.
This interdisciplinary conference will explore the suburb as both a trope and a setting for the social and cultural construction of class, family, home, ethnicity, and neighborhood. We welcome proposals for 20 minute
scholarly papers from graduate students, public historians, and museum professionals in all fields, including, but not limited to: history,
literature, material culture, women's studies, art history, vernacular architecture, historic preservation, decorative arts, cultural geography, archaeology, anthropology, film and mass media, popular culture,
economics, political science, and sociology. Respondents will include prominent local scholars and museum professionals.
