Do They Speak Lyonnaise in Montreal (without crying when slicing the onions)?

Nagano Favored for Montreal Position

If you believe Montreal's Le Presse and Toronto's Globe & Mail, it's
pretty much a done deal: Kent Nagano will succeed Charles Dutoit as music
director of l'Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal.

Nagano, 51, is reported to be the choice of the orchestra's search
committee for the prestigious position, abandoned by Dutoit in a clash
with the musicians last year. The OSM's director of communications said
on Wednesday that the committee has made its selection, but would not
confirm that Nagano is the man. She said the matter is in the hands of
the OSM hiring committee.

Music critic Robert Everett-Green of the Toronto paper, identifies
Nagano as "one of the most accomplished and adventurous conductors of
his generation, and a champion of new repertoire," and "currently chief
conductor of the Los Angeles Opera and music director of the Deutsches
Symphonie-Orchester in Berlin," not mentioning the Berkeley Symphony,
Nagano's longest association and "home company." Nagano's previous
positions included the Halle Orchestra in Manchester and the Lyon Opera.

Already stretched to the limit with constant travel around the world,
Nagano is expected to reduce his workload if he is to take the full-time
Montreal job. Although he is doing very well in Berlin, my guess is that
Nagano is likely to "consolidate" his career on this continent. In an
interesting coincidence with the rumor, Nagano is scheduled to lead the
Montreal orchestra next Tuesday and Wednesday.
