I think that Don Ahatz dated my wife before I met her. I've always
thought my last name was easy to spell, but here in New Mexico folks
often spell it "Saiz". They even did that with one of my driving licenses.
When I was pulled over by a local police officer, I had a hard time
explaining why the name on my license didn't correspond to the name on
my vehicle registration papers.
My first set of Haydn solo piano music reviews will concentrate on Emanuel
Ax's two Sony discs and a disc on Virgin Classics from Mikhail Pletnev.
Then, others including Jando, Brendel, Batik, Ohlsson, Odiaga, Reisenberg,
Gould, Kocsis, Ranki, Olbertz, Planes, Brautigam, McCabe, and Andsnes
will be distributed. This could take some time, particularly since I
recently elevated Rachmaninov reviews to the head of the class or somewhere
in that vicinity. Of course, I have multiple projects going at the same
time in order to have some degree of variety/respite, so Haydn won't be
swept under the rug.
I don't know about giving out "intelligent choices", but they are honest
choices made after much planning and execution. Many weeks ago I bought
about ten recordings of Ravel's "Gaspard de la nuit" at a local record
store to beef up my Ravel library. Just the other day, the classical
music sales clerk at the store asked which of the versions I bought was
my favorite. I told him that I hadn't listened to any of them yet, since
I was just in the planning stages of a project. He looked at me like I
was a nut. He may be right, but I'm a satisfied nut. And now, I'm going
to listen to Richter's Rachmaninov on Olympia and eat a few Planters
cashews; they taste great without being less filling.
