Mike Leghorn continues to bring up an intimate connection between
tension-release and the sonata form. However, tension-release is
independent of sonata form. It can take place in a single note, chord,
and interval. Even Gorecki's 3rd Symphony is loaded with tension-release
elements.
Mike also stated that the Western cultures place great priority on
resolving problems and that tension-release is an element of the priority.
In addition to not agreeing with the premise, I must say that for a people
who place high priority on resolving problems, we solve so few of them.
