Saw an ad in the latest BBC Music Magazine according to which EMI is
remastering the 1953 Tosca, which some people call the greatest opera
recording ever, as part of their GROC series. This, the 100th release
in GROC, will be accompanied by a 200-page color booklet, will be on sale
for a strictly limited time only, and will be offered at mid-price for
the first time in 50 years (all hyperbole comes from the ad, not from me).
Could have sworn I paid only $23 for it at Tower five years ago, but maybe
I got lucky on an opera sale.
I will be greatly interested in the degree of improvement on the already
remastered version that's currently available. The sound on that disc is
already outstanding but I'd buy the GROC remastering if merited. What a
performance!
