OK, it seems we have strayed out of the realm of soil in this lumber
thread, although it has been very interesting and does have considerable
interest to those of us that do historic building surveys, but it has been
a long time since I actually excavated a 2x4.
But, before I close, Josh's mention of watching the how-to shows (which can
be wonderful for learning ancient and modern technology, especially Roy
Underhill's shows) makes me want to share with everyone my favorite Bob
Vila story:
Just before we were married my wife, Jennifer, was on the segment of Home
Again or whatever it is when Bob Vila and his crew were redoing the
Governor's Mansion here in Richmond. She was at the time working at the
Valentine Museum and it was her job to lead Bob's tour of the Wickham House
(where Bob for once refrained from touching the furniture). Jen was really
nervous about being in the spotlight, so, being the nice guy that I am I
sent her a big gob of flowers. Being the humorous guy that I am I also had
the florist put on the note "To Jennifer, Don't go over to the Dark Side,
(signed) Steve Thomas" Jen is no fan of "This Old House" which was hosted
by Bob Vila and now by Steve Thomas, so she had no idea who Steve Thomas
was. Trying to figure out what the card meant she showed it to all the
Valentine staff and they didn't know either. Finally she showed it to
Vila's producer who showed it to Bob and the crew, and they all had a
tremendous laugh!
