>What do listmembers think about Gustav Mahler Symphony no. 9 with the
>Tbilisi Symphony Orchestra conducted by Djansug Kakhidze on DVD?
>Is it worth trying?
Kakhidze is a fine conductor, but possibly not an all-round one. When
I lived in Scotland - some years ago, now - I heard him with the RSNO
several times. He did a revelatory Rachmaninov 2nd Symphony, far and
away the best I have ever heard, and a fascinating Shostakovich 15.
That's a symphony that can trip up almost anybody, and I heard Tilson
Thomas make what I thought was a mess of it at the Barbican not so longs
ago. So I would not turn down a chance to hear Kakhidze conduct anything
Russian. But I also heard him do Mahler 4 in Glasgow, and I have to
report that he missed it by a mile. He really did not seem to be on the
Mahlerian wavelength at all. I also have a vague memory of having heard
him do another one on the radio, and thinking "So he hasn't got any
better, then".
I don't know when the performance on this DVD was recorded. If it's,
say, pre-1996 I should be inclined not to take the chance. If it's more
recent, then maybe he's found a way into Mahler. If he ever does, he'll
be well worth listening to.
