Beth Anderson's Kentucky Swale to be Performed by Owensboro Symphony on
January 18

On January 18, 2003, the Owensboro Symphony Orchestra conducted by
Nicholas Palmer will perform composer Beth Anderson's Kentucky Swale on
their Masterworks Concert at the beautiful RiverPark Center in Owensboro,
Kentucky. You can find more information about the concert at the Owensboro
Symphony Orchestra website - http://www.owensborosymphony.org. The
program will also include music by Shostakovich, Dag Wiren and Mozart.

Beth Anderson has written the following: "A swale is a meadow or a marsh
where there is nourishment and moisture and therefore, a rich diversity
of plant life. My work, since 1984, has been made from swatches (of
newly composed music, rather than found music) which are reminiscent of
this diversity. When a horse named Swale won the Kentucky Derby several
years ago, I discovered the word and have used it extensively: Pennyroyal
Swale and Rosemary Swale for string quartet, Brass Swale and Saturday/Sunday
Swale for brass quintet, Guitar Swale for guitar duet, May Swale for
viola solo, Minnesota Swale for orchestra, New Mexico Swale and August
Swale for chamber ensemble, Flute Swale for solo flute, Rhode Island
Swale for harpsichord, and Three Swales for string orchestra, the most
recent."

She was the subject of Kyle Gann's American Composer feature in 2001 in
Chamber Music Magazine. You can read the article online at
