Wayne, when I have a queen excluder under my hive to force swarms to self-retrieve, I am careful to have no other openings available.  Are you wondering about drone escapes?  My sytem traps the drones in the hive.  Moreover, when I inspect the hive, I wait until it is too late in the day for the bees to think of swarming while the hive is open.   Dan
