Saturday May 8 at 7:30 pm, Washington Musica Viva and John Kamman present
The New Species, the third concert in "EVOLUTIONS! American Chamber Music
meets Jazz," at St. Columba's Church, 4201 Albemarle St. NW, Washington DC
(one block from Tenleytown metro).

"You won't want to miss the hottest music scene in DC.... [Rhonda]
Buckley produced pure honey with her horn.... The synergy between Musica
Viva and Afro Jazz Explosion is more than good entertainment - it's out
there on the edge of what's happening in contemporary music!" (from poet
Karren Alenier's review of the first concert). More than 175 people
showed up at the second concert!

Tickets are $15 in advance, $18 at the door. Tickets may be ordered
online (www.owlsong.com), call 202-265-7297, or send check postmarked
by May 5 to Washington Musica Viva, 9925 Dickens Ave, Bethesda MD 20814.

Program:
This is the program in which the merging of jazz and American chamber
music is complete, blurring distinctions, and hinting at new directions
for the future:

* "Theremin Fantaisie," Bohuslav Martinu's 1944 experiment combining
electronic sounds with oboe, string quartet, and piano, featuring John
Kamman's soaring electric guitar.

* "Chamber Jazz Sextet," in which Washington Musica Viva's piano trio
is "embedded" in John Kamman's jazz trio.

* "Holy Roller," Libby Larsen's evocation of a revival meeting for
saxophone and piano, in which Rhonda Buckley and Carl Banner speak in
tongues.

* "La Creation du Monde," Darius Milhaud's string quartet and piano
version of his 1923 jazz ballet.

Musicians: John Kamman, guitar, Alan Lewine, bass, Marty Knepp, drums,
Rhonda Buckley, saxophone, Robert Lemon, oboe, Sally McLain, violin,
June Huang, violin, Kim Buschek, viola, Jodi Beder, cello, Carl Banner,
piano, and Masa Mitsumoto, conductor.
