It's a journalistic nightmare. Somebody posted a note on a music list,
citing Die Welt, that Sandor Konya, the Hungarian tenor living in Spain,
has died.
There were expressions of sympathy and a great deal of nostalgia,
but when Mike Richter started preparing a Webpage tribute to Konya (at
www.mrichter.com), he realized that there is no confirmation of the death
in the press. He and I involved some other people and we searched through
the Web - including Hungarian newspapers and Die Welt itself - and came up
with absolutely nothing. Nor, for that matter, is there a recent mention
of Konya being alive.
Mike is posting the Konya page as a kind of generalized tribute (or a
"prepared obit"), but we simply don't know what happened. Leads are
welcome.
