Another one though "New England" might be contestable is on the west side of
the Hudson River, the "Old Spanish Mine" in New York State, between Kingston
and New Paltz I think, thought perhaps to have been excavated by the Dutch
in the early 17th century. It was in commercial use in the 19th century so
it is hard to reconstruct how it might have been. The largest single galena
crystal ever found then was excavated from there and put on exhibit at the
Exposition in Chicago, Illinois I think in the later 19th century. An
unofficial report of the mine is in the New York City Public Library's Main
Branch. I don't recall much more of it, I think a spring also was also near
it and well mineral water from there I would not want to drink. It is fairly
remote though near a road that was made to connect two places not the focus
of it, though perhaps earlier routes might be evident from stone walls in
the neighborhood. I heard there was to be a GIS inventory of such walls, the
extent and coverage of which I have not heard about since. Perhaps a
proposal for historic GIS inventory.
