My own life bears that one out. There was no musical background in my
family and I discovered classical music through the radio and record
libraries. Looking back I was listening to (and buying)Szymanowski,
Mahler, Webern, what contemporary American music I could find and
especially Shostakovich whilst finding Bach, Mozart and preclassical
extremely uninteresting. It took me many years to start exploring and
appreciating that repertoire. I still dislike that sort of formulaic
music.
