Just a minute, Susana Gil married William Walton as detailed in her book
William Walton Behind the Facade. The shopping story appears on page 3.
According to the book when Walton didn't ask to marry him he said he was
going back to London and would probably marry one of the girls who was
waiting for his return. Suzana asked to propose once more and thats the
time he first kissed her, she was 22.(It's on page 8.) The BBC had a Walton
day on Radio 3 (it's Walton centenary year) in which Susana now Lady Walton
talked about there time on Ischia where they made their home. Apparently
Walton would work 7 hours each day on his music. If the composing was
going badly he would become very introspective and there would be little
conversation, must have be rather lonely for her. His study is the way he
left when he died.
