This is a topic that the geocache people have been round and round about
for some time, but what do HISTARCHers think about it?

http://www.azgeocaching.com/story.html?story=37

(Geocaching is use of GPS or other locator devices to search for pre-placed
caches. They are usually at interesting public spots such as parks, but
the caches have apparently also been placed in spots where the general
public is not desired.)

It sounds as if the site stewards and the geocachers are pretty much
respectable people, but you know how things can get when it comes down to
people's "territories"

We have at least one geocache at one of our civil war sites, and when I was
up in Maine this summer I met a couple who went to visit only the ones at
historic sites, so it seems like a great way to get people out and see the
world's heritage. The people I have met doing this tended to rush off to
the next one as they were trying to get as many as possible, though.
