Uh oh. And I thought, from reading the subject line,
that this had something to do with dredging out silty
canals. :) I imagine that Ron is correct, though I
suppose it's possible that 'lock washers' may be called
something else in the UK. (?)
Not meaning to throw a spanner in the works...
