Announcing a new web site for Historical Archeologists and others
interested specifically in common 20th century artifacts as dating tools.
You can access this site at:

http://groups.msn.com/20thCenturyArtifacts

This web page is meant to be an interactive resource for historical
archaeologists looking for quick dating tools for more common artifacts
found on sites with 20th century components (we all have them). Even if all
you want to do is figure out what to ignore (as in Section 106 surveys),
this site could help you. In most cases, we all know what these artifacts
look like. If we don't, the "References Cited" section can maybe take us to
places where we can learn more.

The site is set up to be interactive. If you wish to add additional
information or corrections to the dating guides, please post your
information to the message board. I will periodically add it to the web
page, and in the meantime, others can use your message as a sort of
addendum.

If you have a picture of an artifact you would like to display for a
limited time, and have no other way to do so, I can post it to the site for
you. Leave a message on the message board at the site and I will contact
you.

I can also post documents to the site, if they are related to the dating of
common twentieth century artifacts. Again, leave a message on the message
board on the site.

I freely admit that many of my references are old and out of date. I look
forward to hearing from any and all who want to update and build upon this
modest beginning.

Best of luck in your excavations and surveys!

Cathy Spude

P. S. This web site has been set up in a private domain and is not a
government web site. However, I will be treating it as "public" in the
interest of a free and open exchange of information. In other words, no one
but the contributors themselves will "own" anything on the site. I have no
mercenary interests in this site.
