My archeology books web site
<http://www.angelfire.com/ca/cohwill/index.html> has the following books on
it that I find are crucial for any library collection:
Orser, Charles E., Jr. (editor). Encyclopedia of Historical Archaeology
Beaudry, Mary (ed). Documentary Archaeology in the New World
Schuyler, Robert. Historical Archaeology
Bense, Judy, and Jerald Milanich. Archaeology of Colonial Pensacola
Deagan, Kathleen A. Portable Possessions (Artifacts of the Spanish Colonies
of Florida and the Caribbean, 1500-1800) (From the Smithsonian Press and
expensive.)
Deagan, Kathleen A., and Darcie MacMahon. Fort Mose: Colonial America's
Black Fortress of Freedom
Deetz, James. In Small Things Forgotten: An Archaeology of Early American Life
Deetz, James, and Patricia Scott Deetz. The Times of Their Lives: Life,
Love and Death in Plymouth Colony
Haecker, Charles, and Jeffrey Mauck. On the Prairie of Palo Alto:
Historical Archaeology of the U.S.-Mexican War Battlefield
Hume, Ivor Noel. A Guide to Artifacts of Colonial America
-----------------------. If These Pots Could Talk: Collecting 2,000 Years
of British Household Pottery
Hawkins, Bruce R. and David B. Madsen. Excavation of the Donner-Reed
Wagons: Historic Archaeology Along the Hastings Cutoff.
At the AltaMira Press site <http://www.altamirapress.com> I recommend the
following books (and no, I do not work for them ;) ):
Vitelli, Karen (editor). Archaeological Ethics
Hardesty, Donald L., and Barbara J. Little. Assessing Site Significance: A
Guide for Archaeologists and Historians (I highly recommend this book. It
is of great use to anyone who is trying to decide if a site should be saved.)
Zimmerman, Larry J. and William Green (eds). The Archaeologist's Toolkit.
(This series has 8 volumes, many of which are due out in April of 2003. The
entire set is $124 and well worth it (IMHO). The volumes are:
Archaeological Survey and Mapping; Archaeology by Design; Artifacts;
Curating Archaeological Collections; Presenting the Past; Archaeobiology;
and Excavation Methods.)
Praetzellis, Adrian. Death by Theory: A Tale of Mystery and Archaeological
Theory
---------------------------. Dug to Death (forthcoming)
Zimmerman, Larry J., et al. (eds). Ethical Issues in Archaeology
Orser, Charles E. Images of the Recent Past
Loubser, Johannes H. Archaeology: The Comic
If you want more, let me know. I was an archaeology reference librarian in
a previous time.
