About the scuff marks on the bottoms and shoulders of bottles. Back in the
50's all the soda came in wooden cases. These cases often had dirt in the
bottoms and on the top rims of the cases, probably gotten from driving long
miles on dirt roads - of which there were a lot around small towns at that
time, or setting the cases on the ground between transport from truck to
store, etc. This very mundane item might account for the scuff marks.
