This from colleagues in the UK:

The death has been announced in France of Pierre Bourdieu, the
anthropologist and sociologist. So far as I know, no obituary has
yet been published in the UK, but Le Monde carried a report yesterday
(http://www.lemonde.fr/). Bourdieu was 71 and had been suffering
from cancer. His contribution to the theoretical foundations of
post-processual and contextual archaeology (principally through his
books 'The Logic of Practice' and 'Outline of a Theory of Practice')
can hardly be overstated and can be said to have been an
inspiration for a generation of archaeologists. His recent book of essays 'Acts of Resistance' (1998) represents a heartfelt and committed call for
opposition towards the tyranny of the market and neo-liberalism.
