Dan Schmidt asked about this composer.

Not long ago I spoke well of a recent CD with Toch's Cello Concerto,
solo cello Impromptu and Cello Sonata: Albany Troy 421. I'd say it's
an excellent place to start. (My post in the archives is from early March:
the Solo Cello Works thread)

I gather he composed 13 or 14 String Quartets, but apparently the first
5 were lost! Anyway, two (Opus 26 & 70) are out on a Laurel CD (LR 850),
with a couple of divertimenti for string instrument duos as fillers. CPO
released another pair of SQs (Opus 34 & 74), and I recently learned there's
another pair coming from them. All so far are very impressive, and I do
look forward to the new release.

CPO also put out 5 symphonies on 2 CDs. I'm partial to the earlier ones,
2 & 3, but not indifferent to 5, 6 & 7; these last are fine works, but a
little more abstract and not quite as moving, to me.

You'll also find Spiel for wind orchestra on Chandos, and Five Pieces for
winds and percussion on Virgin. I'm less keen about these works: even
lukewarm about the former and puzzled by the latter, given the high
standard set by the other works.

A very fine composer, without question. I'm hoping that what I've heard
merely scratches the surface of his output.
