This is a very interesting question Donald. I was stunned/shocked/appalled
to read something in a Gramophone review a few years back which implied
that most of the reviewers listen to a disc once or, at most, twice before
reviewing.
I can't quantify how many times I listen to a CD before writing a review,
but it is usually in double figures, for precisely the kind of reasons you
outlined - the impressions of an initial listen frequently don't last. I've
known recordings which sounded great on a first listen and then weaker at
every rehearing; also discs which sounded better each time I played them
again.
