International Composition Contest "New Classics"
Johann Strauss Society of Spain

RULES

The 'Asociacion Johann Strauss de Espana' organizes the 1st International
Composition Contest New Classics whose aim is to diffuse the genre of music
promoted by our Association.  This is the first contest of this kind in the
world, since there have been never before an initiative of this kind.  Any
musician wishing to participate may do so, regardless his/her nationality.
The only requisite demanded is that the oeuvres must be original and
unpublished.  The participation does not require any fee payment.  This
event has a free character.

Contest Modalities

   Symphony oeuvre
     This modality is for works written for 'Viennese' symphony orchestra.

   Lyric oeuvre
     This category is for short lyric compositions for single singers
     (Soprano, Mezzo-soprano, Tenor, Baritone or Bass), accompanied by
     symphony orchestra.

   Soloist oeuvre
     This category is for works written for a soloist instrument
     accompanied by symphony orchestra.

Works Requirements

SYMPHONY OEUVRE

To this category may be presented original and unpublished works,
never played by any musical formation.  The oeuvre must be written for an
orchestra ('Viennese' symphony orchestra) having as a minimum: 1 piccolo,
1 flute, 1 oboe, 2 clarinets, 1 bassoon, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, 1 bass
trombone and/or tuba, percussion (that could be played by 2 players) and
strings; and as a maximum: 1 piccolo, 1 flute, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2
bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 2 trombones, 1 bass trombone and/or tuba,
harp, percussion (that could be played by 3 players) and strings.

These oeuvres form must agree with the new classics school structure
(represented by the Strauss family, Franz von Suppe, Jacques Offenbach,
Carl Michael Ziehrer, Emile Waldteufel, John Philip Sousa, etc.), i.e.:

Forms

   Waltz
     With introduction, 4 to 6 waltzes and coda.

   Polka
     With or without introduction. Possible modalities: Francais,
     Tremblante o Schnell.

   Polka mazurka

   March
     It can be presented in the following times: 2/4, 2/2, 4/4 or 6/8

   Quadrille
     It must contain the following dances: Pantalon, Poule, Pastourelle,
     Trenis and Finalle. The fifth dance ("Trenis") may be suppressed.

   Polonaise

   Schottisch
     In 4/4 time.

   Gallop

   Lancers
     It must contain 5 figures.

   Overture
     Viennese style, operetta or comic opera.

   Gavotte

LYRIC OEUVRE

To this category may be presented original and unpublished works,
never played by any musical formation.  The oeuvre must be written for an
orchestra ('Viennese' symphony orchestra) having as a minimum: 1 piccolo,
1 flute, 1 oboe, 2 clarinets, 1 bassoon, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, 1 bass
trombone and/or tuba, percussion (that could be played by 2 players) and
strings; and as a maximum: 1 piccolo, 1 flute, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2
bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 2 trombones, 1 bass trombone and/or tuba,
harp, percussion (that could be played by 3 players) and strings.  The
vocal part must be for a single singer in any voice register.

These oeuvres form must agree with the new classics school structure
(represented by the Strauss family, Franz von Suppe, Jacques Offenbach,
Carl Michael Ziehrer, Emile Waldteufel, John Philip Sousa, etc.), i.e.:

Forms

   Sung Waltz
     With or without introduction, 1 to 6 waltzes and an optional coda.

   Sung Polka
     With or without introduction. Possible modalities: Francais,
     Tremblante or Schnell.

   Sung Polka mazurka

   Sung March
     It can be presented in the following times: 2/4, 2/2, 4/4 or 6/8

   Song
     In waltz, polka, mazurka or march form, with or without combination
     and free style (but inside the above mentioned forms)

   'Operetta' Song
     In waltz, polka, mazurka or march form with or without combination,
     and 'imitating' a song in an operetta.

SOLOIST OEUVRE

To this category may be presented original and unpublished works, never
played by any musical formation.  The oeuvre must be written for an
orchestra ('Viennese' symphony orchestra) having as a minimum: 1 piccolo,
1 flute, 1 oboe, 2 clarinets, 1 bassoon, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, 1 bass
trombone and/or tuba, percussion (that could be played by 2 players) and
strings; and as a maximum: 1 piccolo, 1 flute, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2
bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 2 trombones, 1 bass trombone and/or tuba,
harp, percussion (that could be played by 3 players) and strings.  The
soloist part must be for any of the following instruments: Flute, Piccolo,
Clarinet, Oboe, Bassoon, Trumpet, Horn, Trombone, Tuba, Fluegelhorn, Violin
or Cello.

These oeuvres form must agree with the new classics school structure
(represented by the Strauss family, Franz von Suppe, Jacques Offenbach,
Carl Michael Ziehrer, Emile Waldteufel, John Philip Sousa, etc.), i.e.:

Forms

   Waltz
     With introduction, 4 to 6 waltzes plus coda.

   Polka
     With or without introduction. Possible modalities: Francais,
     Tremblante o Schnell.

   Polka mazurka

   Schottisch
     In 4/4 time.

   Overture
     "Viennese" style, operetta or comic opera.

   Gavotte

Prizes

It will be granted a single prize for the winner in each category
consisting in:

 -  Premiere of the oeuvre, played by the 'Orquesta Sinfonica Johann
    Strauss de Espana'.

 -  Work publishing in a commented edition made by the Music and
    Musicology Department of the 'Asociacion Johann Strauss de Espana'.

 -  Sending of a copy of the published oeuvre to the world main Johann
    Strauss Societies (Austria, Germany, Great Britain, Japan and Sweden)
    for its promotion. Another copy will be sent to the main Spanish
    and international libraries.

 -  Giving of a commemorative plate.

 -  Granting of an acknowledge Diploma.

 -  Author and oeuvre diffusion by all the means that can be used by
    our Society.

Additionally, there is the possibility of broadcasting the work and its
author's biography in the program 'Tres por cuatro (Three quarter time)'.
The 'Asociacion Johann Strauss de Espana' helps in the broadcasting of
this program through 'Radio Nacional de Espana Radio Clasica'.

All the participants will receive a diploma acknowledging their
contribution.

WORKS SUBMITTING

It is possible to send works for the contest starting on July 8th, 2002.
The deadline for scores submission is January 7th, 2003.

Sending methods:

By ordinary mail:

The author full name and mail address must be indicated.  The oeuvre must
be sent as a handwritten orchestra score or printed by any music notation
computer program (Sibelius, Finale, Noteworthy Composer...) at user level.
In that case the printed version may be accompanied by the computer file,
in diskette or CD-R.  The author biography or resume can also be included.
On the envelope there must be an indication saying that is a piece for the
1st International Composition Contest New Classics and the chosen modality.
It is also possible to present together with the orchestra score a
reduction for piano, piano and voice, or piano and soloist instrument,
depending on the modality.  The work may be presented under pseudonym.

Via E-mail

panel of judges and decision

The 1st International Composition Contest New Classics panel of judges will
be formed by:

 -  A member of the Music and Musicology Department of the 'Asociacion
    Johann Strauss de Espana'.

 -  The President of the 'Asociacion Johann Strauss de Espana'.

 -  Two members of the 'Asociacion Johann Strauss de Espana' (to be
    determined).

Panel of judge's members will make public their decision in the 15
days after the deadline for scores submission.  Winners will receive
written communications as quickly as possible.  The contest result will
also be published in the Association Web page.

If for any of the modalities there are no contestants, the corresponding
prize will not be awarded.

Once the winners announced, the prize-giving ceremony will be held in the
date and conditions agreed with them.

All the oeuvres will be returned to their authors together with the
acknowledging diploma.  The winning works will remain in the Library
of the 'Asociacion Johann Strauss de Espana', but the publishing and
copyrights will continue belonging to the authors.
