I think all of us would agree that our tastes evolve, and that can make it
hard to discard a work or performance not presently appreciated. On the
other hand, room to house music is not infinite. Also, I do believe that
there are certain recordings that I'll never appreciate, and those are the
ones I discard in some fashion.

My wife has a motto: If you don't use it for two straight years, you don't
need it and it's time to get rid of it. I guess I'm lucky she still keeps
me around. Actually, her policy applies more to clothing than to people.
When listening to a disc I don't care for, I try it out in different venues
when I'm in different moods. Giving up on a recording after just a couple
of hearings is fine for the consumer, but a reviewer owes the reader a more
extensive trial period.
