Yes, if that were the reason. But, to me, that is a very stupid assumption
on anyone's part.
I've seen orchestra leaders reading magazines on their stands in between
their portions of the score and then playing with their eyes fixed on the
score and hardly ever a shift of the eyelid toward the conductor.
Conductors who direct with some flexibility will find those who are not
watching, I've seen that. I think it's necessary.
As for Zinman, he was fantastic when he did the Nevsky here (with a print
of the film showing). The orchestra members I talked to enjoyed working
with him but not as much, it seems as they had with Masur when he was
visiting.
Dutoit is not one of my favorite conductors, but he's musical in
some normally turgid stuff, and the orchestra's concerns seem to have
been overblown into needless crisis by this particular union leader,
endangering recording contracts (so hard to get today but he still has
his) and an entire season that involves close contacts of his.
