Today is the 75th birthday of Seen & Heard's founder, Peter Grahame
Woolf. Musicweb has printed a series of links to all 780 of the
reviews which he has published over the past three or so years.
Readers familiar with PGW's passionate involvement with music will
find much of interest to revisit - from the obscure and esoteric to
the most familiar, each written with his customary insight. Many of
the concert reviews are unique in that they are the only reviews to
appear in English of festivals which PGW has attended in Europe over
the years. Many of the CD reviews are similarly unique in that PGW
has a gift for hunting out the most obscure labels and the most
unfamiliar music. We wish him a happy birthday, and many more years
of music writing in the year's ahead.
Marc Bridle - Editor, Seen & Heard
At 75, Peter is a man of remarkable energy and burning enthusiasm with
a commitment to the contemporary music scene. With the broadsheets and
magazines constantly cutting back on the space devoted to classical music
there was decreasing representation, particularly for young artists or
reports of overseas festivals. MusicWeb was able to help Peter realise his
vision of a viable web-magazine and so Seen and Heard was born and has gone
from strength to strength and now carries more contemporary reviews than
any other outlet. At his own expense, Peter and his wife Alexa attended
numerous International Festivals sending back detailed, well-Illustrated
and knowledgeable reports. He was also a past master at digging up the
most obscure recorded repertoire with labels, composers and artists most
of us were unaware existed. Although Seen and Heard is now edited by
Marc Bridle, Peter is still a valued contributor and we anticipate he
will continue to be so for many years to come.
