He didn't intend you to hear anything. Or, rather, he inteded you to hear
everything, every sound, every cough, every creak of the building, every
passing ambulance...his point was that we normally filter these sounds out.
By presenting a silent piece in an environment where people are deliberatly
listening he hoped to get them to hear what was around them.
Of course, whether this works when you know the idea is another matter.
