Sean:
I did some excavations of an 1880-1901 log cabin in Skagway, Alaska,
occupied by a Euro-Canadian man, his Tlingit wife and their children.
Overlying deposits were from later occupation by the same family in the
house the built directly attached to the cabin, and by the white family
that lived in the house after 1906.
The final report is available in most libraries that serve as official
government documents repositories. The citation for the final report is:
Blee, Catherine Holder
1988 Archeological Investigations in Skagway, Alaska, Volume II: The
Moore Cabin and House, Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, Alaska.
United States Government Printing Office, Denver.
Jonathon Horn excavated an 1880's hunters cabin near Durango, Colorado. The
reference for that report is:
Horn, Jonathon C., Gary Matlock and Duane Smith
1986 Archeological Investigations of an Historic Cabin near Durango,
Colorado. Southwestern Lore 52(3):1-33.
Both collections were extremely parsimonious, as is typical with
transients. Your 1840's - 1850's cabin will probably not have as much glass
as the late 19th century sites, but there may be some other, interesting
patterns that overlap.
