Hi, folks.  I also sent this query to museum-l, another list I belong to.
In some earlier research on santos, santeros, bultos, reredos, retablos, etc.,
I didn't run across much info. on inlaid straw crosses.  (Of course, I wasn't
 looking specifically for such info. then.)  I have some articles from El
Palacio and New Mexico magazine on Rodriguez family's inlaid straw crosses.
And I'm about to start more intensive library research.  But I thought that
 there might be somebody else out in netland who has done some research on this
 topic who might share bibs and data.  Thanks.  Please reply to me, unless
