Dear Jeff,
Last September I was involved with the analytical demolition of a
'post-and-beam' house in Grantown on Spey, Inverness-shire. For the
project we had to develop a recording strategy that would allow rapid
demolition of the structure, while at the same time remaining
flexible enough to ensure a qualitative approach to recording (the
structure is to be re-built in the future).
We employed a system similiar to that mentioned in your e-mail where the
building was sub-divided into tiers along the lines of:
1. Areas (roof, gables, walls etc.)
2. Compass position (i.e. west, east, north and south)
3. Spatial position (i.e. internal or external)
4. Context Number
So in reality we could create a database and drawings that would have for exampl
e
entries such as W/E/I/095. Which at a glance can be understood to
mean that the element removed came from the internal face of the
eastern wall, the details being stored on standard proforma context
sheet 095.
The system seems to have worked quite effectively, and should enable
a rapid re-build to occur. We have produced a technical report on the work.
If you are interested I can send you one in the post.
Hope this is of some help, best wishes.
John Atkinson
