Rudolf Clemen, in his 1927 book "Byproducts in the Packing Industry"
discusses the uses of cattle bone, horn, etc. on pp. 301-301. Another useful
source is Frank Burnham's "Rendering: The Invisible Industry" (1978: Pacific
Coast Renderers Association). Although there's not much detail on bone
processing into consumer end-products, F.W. Wilder's 1905 book, "The Modern
Packing House" (Chicago: Nickerson and Collins Co.) has some illustrations
of bone splitting machines.
