I have always suspected that the lack of salary and
ranges in posted positions were the result of shrewd,
small business organizations trying to gather a range of
responses from a variety of applicants of varying
qualification in order to determine how their business
could best profit from the relationship and their
dollars. As a 10 year CRM professional whose current
salary matches that of his mid-twenties (Mechanical
Engineering) and his Social Security Benefit (if he
should die from archaeology:):):), I have yet to find a
retired CRM professional on pension, although 401k's are
generously offered. Despite the youth of the industry(
and the passing of my youth:), I am still happy in the
consulting archaeology world and continue to have faith
and free choice in my future. If we and others continue
to give away or minimize the value of our services, only
ourselves and ultimately, the resources we study will
suffer the consequences. The only solace I have found
is to return to academia, the reason most of us wanted
to get into archaeology in the first place:)
