  My father, who did ornamental metalwork all his life (worked at the Samuel,
later Harvey, Yellin shop) always asked this question. "Which was the most
important trade/occupation before modern times?"
  Answer: The blacksmith. He made everyone else's tools, including his own.
They couldn't work without him:-)
