Hello All:

I have the fine pleasure of having under my care the exquisite
archaeological collection of 18th century tavern ware from the John
Hatchett Tavern (erroneously known as John Howlett Tavern) at Chesterfield
Courthouse, VA. As part of general edumication and putting things in
order, I am looking for information on the well-known tavern bowls
(Tin-Glazed Delft) with inscriptions such as "One Bowl More and Then" One
Bowl More Will" etc. There are some 70 such vessels represented in the
assemblage but I do not have any resources at hand to fully understand them.

Here's a pic of one that looks only somewhat similar to what we have:

In reading the correspondence there are several letters which note the
variety of the sayings on the bowls, and their uses, etc, but the date
ranges are given generally for that of English Delft (1600-1800) or simply
late 18th century.

The correspondence on hand is some 20 years old, so I hope there is
something more recent that will tell me about these beautiful pieces, their
period of production and use, distribution, and the variety of sayings.

Deerfield Museum has a new book out on Delftware, and I could call some of
my connections with Winterthur (my wife who is now on vacation at Disney),
and, oh, Williamsburg is but a few miles away, but I'm also thinking that
perhaps HISTARCH listers know of some other favorite sources that I could
get. Any suggestions?

Blatant Plug for a book I have no connection to:
