Another dated program also said to be for archaeology is "Landscape
Explorer" By WooleySoft. It was the first I saw that could overlay USGS or
Ordnance Surveys over a DTM, using the flatmap as the 3D generated surface.

They became "Geomantics" and actually recreate landscapes from DTM and other
dat creating a photorealistic scene of a landscape comparable to a photo
complete with sky and hedgerows. An interesting program that may or not be
in the realm of historic documentation, but it could be a tool for
visualization on a plane for interpretation.
