I don't know if it's ethnic or not, but rain barrels were common
features of beach houses here in Delaware. Ours was mounted on a
structure near the roof, so that we had good pressure for our
showers. In the summer, a shower in sun-heated rainwater was a great
way to get the salt off the hide after a day on the beach.
