You may want to check Stone's Michilimackinac (1974) report.  On page 148 (figure captions l and m) there are a couple examples that look similar.

We recovered a heavily decorated pipebowl with raised panels around the rim,
with raised letters in the panel.

Any comparable examples or IDs out there?
