Philip Jongeneel believes:

>The Adams pieces on the CD are all recorded elsewhere in what I believe
>to be better performances.

I'm not sure I agree with Philip here, though I have a limited
Adams collection. I have Harmonium on Telarc with the Atlanta SO under
Shaw, and I find this performance and the BBC Magazine performance to
be approximately equal -- the first and third movements on Telarc are
better, but I prefer the BBC performance of "Because I Couild Not Stop
for Death" -- altogether more ethereal and evocative of the Dickinson
texts, I think.

The Chairman Dances and Short Ride in a Fast Machine I have on EMI with
Rattle and the CBSO -- I prefer the pacing of the BBC recording here
for both pieces, and the recording levels are better than the 1994 CBSO
performance.
