My 16-CD set of Sullivan with performances by Sargent, Vivian Dunn, Groves,
and Mackerras just arrived.
Sir Gilbert is in there with the operettas Patience, H.M.S. Pinafore,
Trial by Jury, Gondoliers, Iolanthe, Mikado, Pirates of Penzance,
Ruddigore, and Yeoman of the Guard. However, there's Sullivan without
Gilbert as well: Symphony in E "Irish," cello concerto (the Mackerras
reconstruction), incidental music to The Tempest and The Merchant of
Venice, the Overture in C (In memoriam), the overture to Cox and Box, and
the Overture "di ballo." Then there's Gilbert hovering in the background
with the overtures to The Sorcerer (probably the Toye arrangement) and
Princess Ida.
What will I be listening to over the next few weeks?
