Singspiel - CBC Radio 2, La Chaine, BBC Radio 3, Antena2 and WNED all
broadcast Beethoven's Fidelio on Saturday at the Met at 13:30. BBC/3
devotes, in their 4:00 "Composer of the week" spot, the week to Jacques
Offenbach - (all excerpts) Le papillon & Genevieve de Brabant on Monday;
Orphee aux enfers on Tuesday; La belle Helene, La grande-duchesse de
Gerolstein & La Perichole on Wednesday; La vie parisienne on Thursday; Les
contes d'Hoffmann on Friday. On Monday 17:30, Antena2 has Leoncavallo's
"Os Palhacos" (someone will have to translate that from Portuguese to
Italian - the c is a c cedilla). On Thursday 15:00, Antena2 has an
historic recording of Verdi's Ernani with Placido Domingo & Mirella
Freni conducted by Riccardo Muti.
Artists - On Sunday 8:00 BBC/3 has "a recital given by the pianist Alfred
Brendel at the 1999 Aldeburgh Festival"; during the week at 5:05 they're
also highlighting violinist Ruggiero Ricci. On Wednesday and Thursday at
13:30 La Chaine has Bach Partitas played by pianist Andras Schiff.
Alfred Schnittke - on Friday BBC/3 will be broadcasting 6 works by the late
Russian composer. At 6:30, it's the Polyphonic Tango for small orchestra
& Concerto grosso No 3; at 13:00 Piano Sonatas #1 and #2; at 14:30 it's the
Violin concerto #4; at 15:25 Symphony #1. During the week prior to this,
at 6:30, they explore "the diverse musical influences on the composer and
placing his work in its social and political context" by presenting works
by many composers (mostly 20th Century Russian - but,also, Jean Sibelius
and Arvo Part).
