In response to the thread about bottle collectors, their publications, and
ethics, I confess to subscribing to magazines used by collectors. I do it
partly because I have a vital interest in bottle interpretation and patent
medicines and partly it gives me an opportunity to represent a different
viewpoint. For example, I subscribe to the Federation of Historic Bottle
Collector's "Bottles and Extras". I have tried on three occasions to
encourage their Board to formulate a code of ethics for collectors to include
sensitivity to archaeology and preservation laws. Periodically, there are
articles that are scholarly and useful. We should not assume that all bottle
collectors are looters or even diggers. On the other hand, some collectors
are quite knowledgeable, ethical, and potential allies of archaeology.
