Field Technician (General Assistant)
CLOSING DATE: 9/4/01
DEPARTMENT: ANTHROPOLOGY
COMPENSATION: $11.00/hour

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Archeologists from the University of Maryland,
College Park, under the auspices of an existing cooperative agreement with the
National Park Service, are currently seeking an archeological field technician
to participate in an on-going archeological identification and evaluation survey
at Monocacy National Battlefield Park south of Frederick, Maryland. The focus
of this project is the Best Farm (known also as L'Hermitage), a plantation
founded in the 1790s by a French family fleeing civil unrest in San Domingue
(Haiti). The project also focuses on the Civil War military aspects of the
region, and includes limited testing of two recorded prehistoric sites.

The field technician position is full time, beginning on September 4, 2001 and
lasting through May 11, 2002. There is a strong possibility of a one year
renewal through May 2003. Both field and laboratory work will be required.

QUALIFICATIONS: At a minimum, a suitable candidate will have a bachelor's
degree in anthropology, archeology, or a related field, and will have
successfully completed an accredited field school; however, additional field and
laboratory experience beyond an undergraduate field school is preferred.
Experience with late eighteenth- and nineteenth-century material culture is
required, and candidates possessing experience with Civil War material culture
and history will receive higher consideration. Knowledge of appropriate field
and laboratory methods, reliable transportation, motivation, and professionalism
are necessary. Some supervision of volunteers in the field and in the
laboratory may be required, and staff members are expected to conduct themselves
in a professional manner at all times.

TO APPLY: For best consideration please send a letter of interest and
curriculum vitae to Project Director Joy Beasley at [log in to unmask] by
September 4, 2001.

The University of Maryland is an Affirmative Action/Equal Employment Opportunity
Employer.
