Scott Morrison tells that this work...
>...is a triumph!
Can't rightly second the assessment, as I haven't yet had the pleasure.
Mind you, I'm not surprised, after getting to know Holloway's Violin and
Horn Concertos, conducted for Collins by Matthias Bamert -- whose keen
'nose' for fine, lesser-known composers always impressed me. (Something,
come to think of it, that applies to Scott M as well.)
Then, just yesterday, the postman brought me Holloway's Fantasy-Pieces
on the Heine 'Liederkreis' of Schumann for Piano & 12 Instruments, coupled
with his Serenade in C for Clarinet, Bassoon, Horn, String Quartet &
Double Bass (Nash Ensemble, on Hyperion again) An initial hearing so
far has borne out my good impression of Holloway.
So this music for 2 pianos has again jumped onto my wishlist for a next
visit to the CD shop, where I first saw it and hesitated.
All of which brings me to the small point I had to contribute to Scott's
review, which just may sway a soul or two: Hyperion's priced these two
CDs of Holloway's Gilded Goldbergs as one.
