Both. I personally cannot hear music without to some extent notating
it in my head. Similarly, when I play from memory I find it essential
to have not only the aural memory of the piece and the physical memory in
the fingers, but also a visual memory. To this end I sometimes write the
piece out from memory if I'm worried that it is not absolutely secure.
