I have been working on a lighthouse reservation established by the Coast
Guard on an island in California and operated from 1872-1916. The original
keeper of the light from 1872 until his death in 1881 was Lieutenant
Commander Charles McDougal. From 1881 until its closure it was operated by
Kate McDougal, his widow. Anyone else have examples of widows taking over
the operation of lighthouses for military reserves after the keeper died? Or
is this an anomaly?
