You will definitely want to look into the Indian Placement Program of the
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Although I know of no
archaeological investigations dealing with this particular program a good
historical source to begin with is:

James B. Allen, "The rise and decline of the LDS Indian student placement
program, 1947-1996," p. 85-119, in Mormons, Scripture, and the Ancient World
(Provo, Utah : Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies, c1998).

Good Luck!
