   HERE WE GO ROUND PRETENTIOUSLY

   Richard Rodgers was born on June 28, 1902, but the centenary
   celebrations in New York have been neither plentiful nor festive.
   Trevor Nunn's Royal National Theater production of "Oklahoma!" failed
   to weather its transatlantic crossing unscathed.  On Broadway, the
   iconoclastic darkness seemed forced, the theater too large and the
   voices meagre despite grotesque over-amplification.  Even more
   distressing, the decision to scrap Agnes de Mille's historic, organic
   choreography in favor of Susan Stroman's fashionable razzle-dazzle
   seemed mystifying at best, perverse at worst.  ...
